Say Hello to NoDak’s 1st Food Hub!

Say Hello to NoDak’s 1st Food Hub!
North Dakota is getting the first only Food Hub in Anamoose, ND. Some of you may wonder what exactly a food hub is. A food hub supports local farmers by providing distribution for their products, such as organic crops.
In honor of agriculture month, let me tell you a little bit about the new venture coming to our area. What started as just a passion of wanting to lead a more organic and healthy life by owners Mirek and Julia Petrovic, has developed into something that all people can enjoy and benefit from. Their new business is called Farmtastic Heritage Foods Hub and it is located on main street in Anamoose, ND. Although new to ND, it is not new to the rest of the country. There are in fact many food hubs across the US and it is something that more and more people are seeking out. This particular food hub will be a restaurant, bakery, grocery store and a light processing center of organic foods all in one.
Here’s how the food hub will work; Farmtastic will pool produce from different vendors and people and then distribute those goods or make them into delicious dishes that anyone can enjoy. They will be open for lunch and dinner and have no set menu. The fruits and vegetables will vary week to week, so there's no way to make a menu ahead of time. Every time people stop by, it will be a surprise as to what they will be featuring in their recipes. They currently have a few vendors that they will receive produce from, but hope to get more from local farmers. If you would like to contribute, it is very easy. You can become a lifetime member by paying a one time fee. Once a member, you can contribute as much as you want and in turn you will receive 75% of the profit. The percentage is 65% for non members. They plan to do all the marketing of your produce, which is just one of the benefits. The Petrovic's hope to expand the business into catering and event hosting. Also on that list is hosting cooking classes & meal deliveries. When we asked Julia her number one reason for wanting to start this venture, her answer was clear. She believes that food can very healing to our bodies and the more organic and natural, the better. Their goal is to help people make better choices when it comes to food. The Petrovic's have been aggregating and distributing produce for two years now personally, so they are no strangers to the process. They have established great relationships with the Bisman Community Co-op by doing this. Taking it one step further in order to spread the word of food hubs, they are doing speaking engagements to help educate people on how food hubs work.
The food hub plays a crucial part in the community food system in the fact that it pools small and medium sized farms together in order to gain access to large markets in retail and wholesale demand. Just to give you an example of some items that will be available; soups, breads, jams, desserts and homemade organic meals. They invite everyone to come check out Farmtastic and plan to have a grand opening on March 15th. Let’s help welcome them and celebrate all that they are doing for North Dakota!
